French virologist calls for use of therapeutic vaccines in AIDS treatment

OUAGADOUGOU (AFP) - Luc Montagnier, a French virologist who helped to first identify
HIV, said that antiretroviral drugs should be combined with a therapeutic vaccine to revive an
AIDS patient's immune system.

"Our proposal is that after a relatively short triple therapy, we add immunostimulators, antioxidants and a therapeutic vaccine to make the immune system of the sick person control the viral infection," Montagnier said.

Vaccine therapy is the use of vaccines to protect the body against one or several illnesses or to fight a disease by increasing resistance.

"We know that triple therapy partially restores the immune system. We therefore have to find the means to restore it to a better state," Montagnier said at the opening of a centre for biomolecular research on AIDS in the Burkina Faso capital Ouagadougou.
