FDA approves MedMira's rapid HIV test


HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- MedMira said Thursday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared its Reveal G3 rapid HIV test, which delivers results in less than three minutes.

MedMira said the Reveal G3 test is the fastest rapid test approved in the United States. Previous versions of the Reveal test were approved by the FDA in 2003 and 2004.

"We are very pleased to receive approval on the third generation of Reveal, which brings to market key advancements that will drive further adoption of rapid HIV testing in point of care settings," said Hermes Chan, MedMira's president and chief executive officer.

"HIV continues to be one of the greatest health challenges in the (United States) and the healthcare system is taking steps to address the control and prevention of this epidemic," Chan added.

The Reveal G3 includes the InstantGold cap, which makes the test easier to use by eliminating the need for reconstitution and refrigeration of the colorimetric detection agent used in previous versions of the test.
